KANUNGU: Police in Kanungu District are searching for suspects involved in the murder of a 25-year-old man, who was allegedly killed on suspicion of stealing scrap materials in Kanungu Town Council.
The deceased, identified as Augustine Matinisa, a resident of Kishojwa Cell, Northern Ward in Kanungu Town Council, was assaulted on the evening of September 2, 2024, at around 8:00 PM. His employer, Safina, and her workers reportedly attacked him, suspecting he had stolen scrap materials.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He stated that Matinisa was initially taken to Makiro Health Center III for treatment, but as his condition worsened, he was referred to Kambuga Referral Hospital on Monday at around 3:00 PM. Sadly, he passed away the following day at approximately 3:00 AM.
Maate said that a report was filed at Kanungu Central Police Station by Rose Kyomuhendo, a scrap dealer, the scene of the crime was visited and documented, and a postmortem was conducted at Kambuga Hospital.
He revealed that the suspects remain at large.
Maate added that the deceased’s body has been handed over to his family for a dignified burial.
