KAMPALA: Police in the Kampala Metropolitan area have apprehended PC Ahabwe Michael, a deserter from Kampala Central Police Station, who vanished after absconding with a motorcycle belonging to a boda boda rider identified as Walusimbi Samuel.

The motorcycle had been seized during a routine traffic enforcement operation, with the officer assigned to transport it to the Kampala Central Police Station yard, which he failed to do. Subsequently, the suspect vanished from police custody and was declared a deserter.

During his time in hiding in Mbarara, the suspect enlisted with SGA Security Company as a security guard. His initial deployment was on the 20th of January 2024 at the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. However, after 18 days, on the 16th of February 2024, he was apprehended for pilfering metallic rail bars used in electricity infrastructure.

The theft case was transferred along with the suspect to Kampala Central Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Uganda Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga, condemned such acts of robbery and theft committed by current or former police officers, labeling them as disgraceful to the force.

“It is deeply regrettable when a police officer abuses their authority for personal gain, as it undermines public confidence in the force and besmirches the reputation of the other 50,000 police officers who dutifully serve and protect Ugandans every day,” stated Enanga.

He further stated, “We are steadfast in purging the force of such rogue elements. Additionally, we are circulating his images to facilitate the identification of any individuals who may have been victimized by him, urging them to step forward and lodge their complaints at KMP Headquarters at CPS Kampala. The officer will face charges of theft, robbery, and desertion.”
