KAMPALA – Uganda Police has reported 451 accidents, with 77 being fatal, 219 serious, and 155 minor incidents.
SP Kananura Michael, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, mentioned a significant accident on 28-7-23 at Kitale Mile 6 along the Busega-Entebbe Express Highway, involving a motor vehicle with registration No. UBL 438E T/wish. A 4-year-old passenger lost their life, and three others were injured.
Another fatal accident occurred on 29-7-23 at 01:10 PM at Kazinga Roofing Junction along the Bweyogerere-Kampala Highway, involving a collision between a motor vehicle with registration No. UAY 634k/UAD 635Q (M/Benz Trailer) and a motorcycle with registration No. UEX 867F (Bajaj Boxer).
The three people on the motorcycle were killed instantly, and the driver of the trailer is currently on the run.
SP Kananura attributed major causes of accidents to over speeding and improper overtaking.
To promote road safety, the police advised observing speed limits, having discipline, exercising patience, driving within legal speed limits, and using safety seat belts while driving. The public was encouraged to support traffic police in reporting cases of indiscipline on roads.
The police have conducted road safety campaigns, including TV and radio programs, as well as physical engagements. They also conducted operations targeting vehicles in Dangerous Mechanical Condition, resulting in the de-registration of 1287 motor vehicles across the country.
Additionally, they are focusing on boda-bodas without permits, carrying more than one passenger, and lacking helmets and reflective jackets.
