KABALE: Police in Kabale District on Tuesday rescued a student at Kabale School of Comprehensive Nursing, a government institution, who had attempted to commit suicide for reasons yet to be determined.
The student, identified as Elizabeth Babirye, is in her third year pursuing a certificate in nursing and midwifery.
She had climbed atop the water tank stands at the school premises on Makanga Hill in the Central Division of Kabale Municipality around 3:00 PM, apparently with the intention of jumping. Concerns had been raised by some students who had noticed troubling messages on her WhatsApp status in previous weeks, such as “Rest in peace Dear” and “Goodbye Musawo Liz, you will always be loved.”
According to students who wished to remain anonymous, Elizabeth had displayed concerning behavior, including fainting spells, leading some to speculate that she might be under some form of curse expressing worries about her ability to care for patients once she completes her studies.
There were also suggestions that her actions were a desperate cry for attention, reflecting broader issues of inadequate support and welfare within the institution. Some even speculated about potential mental health struggles she might be facing.
CUE IN STUDENTS….ON SCENARIO…….RR//
Fortunately, fellow students spotted Elizabeth climbing the water tank and raised an alarm, prompting administrators to intervene and alert the Kabale Central Police station. Responding officers managed to safely secure her with a stretcher and lower her down using ropes before rushing her to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Makanga for medical evaluation and care.
By press time, attempts to obtain comments from school administrators were futile, and the police had not issued a statement on the matter.
