Riddle of Rukungiri Man Disappearance Ends Tragically, Body Recovered from River Birara

RUKUNGIRI – Police in Rukungiri District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a 35-year-old man known as Alisoni Biryomumisho, also known as Kamanda.

The deceased was a resident of Kyato cell in Nyakabungo parish, Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri District.

The unfortunate incident began on September 11, 2023, around 4:00 PM when the deceased mysteriously disappeared. His lifeless body was discovered later on September 23, 2023, around 1:00 PM in a decomposing state, floating in river Birara in Munengo, Kanungu District.

Prior to his disappearance, on September 10, 2023, Alisoni and his wife, Kobugaiga Doreen, attended night prayers at the residence of Tumwesigye Eriasaph in Kyabugashe cell, Rushasha Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-County, Rukungiri District.

On the fateful day of September 11, 2023, at approximately 4:00 PM, Alisoni suddenly fled through a banana plantation while in the presence of Kobugaiga Doreen and Akampa Abel. Despite their efforts to catch up with him, he managed to outpace them and vanished to an unknown location. This prompted them to inform the prayer leader, Tumwesigye Eriasaph.

For six days, his whereabouts remained unknown, leading to the official report of his disappearance being filed at Buyanja Police Station, vide SD REF: 09/17/09/2023, on September 17, 2023.

In response, both the police and the deceased’s relatives initiated a concerted effort to locate him, but their efforts proved futile. It was only on September 23, 2023, at around 1:00 PM, that the tragic discovery was made. Local residents found Alisoni’s decomposed body floating in the waters of river Birara in the Enengo area, on the Kanungu side.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed that the body, in its deteriorated state, was identified by the deceased’s mother, Honest Kemitembe, and subsequently handed over to the family for burial arrangements.
