NTUNGAMO: Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group in South Western Uganda has begun distributing 400 mattresses to vulnerable groups across various districts in the region.
The group, led by Peace Rugambwa, aims to support the needy, especially the elderly. Speaking on Saturday at Rugambwa’s residence in Ntungamo District, Ms. Busingye Mangyeri, Vice Chairperson of the group, noted that the mattresses will be distributed in Kabale, Rukiga, Kisoro, Ntungamo, and other districts.
Ms. Mangyeri commended Rugambwa for her dedication to the cause, stating, “We condemn those opposing this project and, in God’s name, we nullify their intentions. Thank you, Madam Peace, for remembering the rural people.”
Mr. Sabiiti Rubegyemera, Chairperson of the Ntungamo District chapter, expressed his gratitude, saying, “Today, we received a consignment of 400 mattresses from Peace Rugambwa. These will be distributed to the elderly and other vulnerable individuals.”
He added that the group had also recently distributed beans, onion seeds, and other items aimed at improving household incomes in poverty-stricken areas.
Ms. Loy Tibemanya, Chairperson of the Rukiga District chapter, echoed similar sentiments. stating “I am so pleased to receive these mattresses, which will be shared among elderly members. We are proud of you, Peace Rugambwa, and thank President Yoweri Museveni for supporting such community initiatives,” Tibemanya stated, urging more people to join the group to ensure no one is left behind.
Ms. Aidah Twinobusingye, Chairperson of the group’s Disciplinary Committee, thanked Rugambwa for her continuous support to rural communities.
“I appreciate her efforts to uplift our people in partnership with President Museveni. Recently, she donated 200 mattresses, 150 blankets, and bed sheets. Today, we’re receiving 400 mattresses. Thank you, Peace, for your generosity.” Twinobusingye said.
The Boona Bagaigahare Nyekundire Group was launched in Ntungamo by President Museveni’s brother, Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho, also known as Salim Saleh, in 2016.
The launch included officials from NAADS, the Microfinance Support Centre, MPs, and district chairpersons. Initially focused on promoting onion farming, the group provided members with seedlings and livestock like pigs and goats.
It has since expanded to include members from Rukungiri, Kanungu, Rubanda, Rukiga, Kisoro, Kabale, Ntungamo, Mbarara, Mitooma, Sheema, Bushenyi, Kiruhura, Isingiro, and other districts.
Despite its impact, the group reportedly faces opposition from some political leaders, particularly in Rukungiri District, who have expressed resistance to its growing influence among rural communities.
