According to Minister Muhwezi, responsible reporting is crucial for the development of Uganda. He made these remarks on Saturday while serving as the keynote speaker at the Kigezi Media Symposium, held at Rukungiri Inn in Rukungiri District.

The symposium was organized by Ugandans Below 40 (UB40) under the theme: “Encouraging Ugandans to Move Beyond Politics of Identity Through Awareness Creation by Information Managers.”

Muhwezi emphasized that journalists should prioritize the interests of Uganda over personal or professional interests.

The Minister also encouraged journalists to actively combat the politics of identity, describing it as a threat to national security. He explained that identity-based politics divides Ugandans and leaves them vulnerable to manipulation.

He urged journalists to play a pivotal role in countering this divisive trend, which he believes is undermining patriotism. Muhwezi further stated that politics of identity is driven by those lacking constructive ideas.

Dr. Jude Katerega, President of UB40, also spoke at the event, urging leaders to abandon identity politics, which he said hinders both national and community development.

Katerega argued that leaders who promote identity-based divisions will struggle to advocate effectively for their people, thereby hindering wealth creation.
