KISORO – Members of the community surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Bukimbiri County are expressing concerns about the potential privatization of their community organization, Nkuringo Conservation Development Foundation (NCDF), at the expense of the community’s well-being.
Established in 2004 as NCCDF, the organization aimed to benefit the communities of Nkuringo and Rubuguri town councils through the thriving tourism sector in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Over the years, NCDF, under various leaderships, has implemented projects like Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, livestock provision to communities, and scholarships for selected members.
However, apprehension looms after a new Chairperson was elected last week on Thursday by only 21 self-designated founder members. This has raised concerns about the future of NCDF as a community organization, especially since the broader community was denied the opportunity to vote for their preferred leader.
Zoveriyo, a resident of Nteko cell in Nkuringo town council, voices the community’s loss of trust in the organization’s proceedings, fearing the potential demise of projects benefiting them. Twesiime Giridasi from Kikobero highlights the perceived hijacking of the organization, emphasizing the removal of the word “community” from its name. He laments that only 21 people can elect councilors and appoint a chairperson, limiting the democratic involvement of the wider community.
