RUBANDA – Local leaders in Rubanda District are urging the government to intensify sensitization efforts to curb the rising cases of domestic violence at the household level.
They were on Monday 30th October 2023 speaking at Hakirondorondo and Nyamiyaga trading Centers, and at Ikumba Sub county headquarters, during the meeting organized by the Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon Prosy Akampurira Begumisa Mbabazi, to sensitize women on her new project dubbed “Prosperous Women Rubanda (PWR), aimed at sustaining their livelihoods.
Maltazari Mukwenda, LC1 chairman for Kyanamira Village in Nyaruhanga Parish, Rubanda Town Council, reported approximately three domestic cases registered monthly within his village. Mukwena said that despite efforts by local council leadership to resolve domestic conflicts at the family level, resistance persists, and some prefer these cases to be addressed at the district level. Mukwenda attributes most cases to increased alcoholism among men and land-related issues.
Tumuhimbiise Silivano, LC1 Chairperson of Mukashekye Village, links domestic cases to poverty and redundancy among men and women in the area. Tumuhimbiise believes that enhancing sensitization can lead to a reduction in domestic violence cases.
