MBARARA: The National Unity Platform (NUP) Ankole Sub-region coordinator, Bright Muhumuza, has reportedly been abducted by heavily armed Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers, according to the party’s president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Kyagulanyi alleged that Muhumuza was abducted on Tuesday evening from a restaurant in Mbarara City and driven to an undisclosed location in a drone vehicle, Reg. No. UAK 707G.
“The criminal regime is on a rampage, BUT WE ARE NOT SCARED,” Kyagulanyi declared, demanding the immediate release of Muhumuza and all other political prisoners.
He emphasized that supporting the National Unity Platform is not a crime.
“We have just been notified about the abduction of our comrade Bright Muhumuza from Mbarara City by heavily armed UPDF soldiers. Apparently, they found him at a restaurant, abducted him, and drove him to an unknown location in a drone, Reg. No. UAK 707G. The criminal regime is on a rampage, BUT WE ARE NOT SCARED. We demand the freedom of comrade Bright and all other political prisoners. Supporting the National Unity Platform is not a crime,” Kyagulanyi stated.
In a related development, Kyagulanyi announced that NUP supporter Bashabe Vianne has returned after spending 12 days in detention at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) torture chambers.
According to Kyagulanyi, Bashabe was abducted from Hoima on March 6 and had been missing since. Upon his release, he recounted a harrowing ordeal of physical and psychological torture.
“He just told us his deeply troubling tale of physical and psychological torture. The thugs beat him every day, especially under the feet, demanding to know why, as a person from Western Uganda, he could support me and the NUP,” Kyagulanyi said.
Bashabe also revealed that he had been detained alongside fellow NUP members Mumbya Hussein and Shakur Ssentongo, both of whom had also suffered severe torture.
Kyagulanyi noted that one of them is now unable to stand due to the brutality they endured.
He further alleged that Bashabe was released on the condition that he would never support NUP again or speak to the media about his experience.
“THANKFULLY, he defied that nonsense and came straight to our office. By now, these criminals should have realized that their crimes against us only make us stronger and give us even more reason to fight for our redemption! Welcome back, brother. UGANDA WILL BE FREE,” Kyagulanyi declared.
