KAMPALA: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Eriya Kategaya, describing him as a trailblazer in patriotic politics in Uganda.
Kategaya, who served as Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, passed away on March 2, 2013.
Speaking at a memorial service held at Kololo on Thursday, where he was joined by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, the President praised Kategaya’s commitment to nationalism and principled leadership.
“Kategaya was the pioneer of the politics of patriotism—the politics of loving Uganda,” President Museveni stated.
He warned against identity-based politics, which he described as harmful to national progress.
“In the 1960s, it was due to Kategaya that we started recognizing the mistakes of UPC, DP, and Kabaka Yekka—the politics of identity. We tried to influence the situation, but people were not listening, and it eventually led to the collapse of 1971 when Amin took over,” he remarked.
The President also acknowledged Kategaya’s unique contributions to Uganda’s political landscape.
“Kategaya had a different approach, but he brought in many contacts and perspectives that we otherwise wouldn’t have had,” he added.
Additionally, he urged leaders to remain focused on clear objectives in their governance efforts.
“When you are working with clear aims, things become easier. With Kategaya and those of us who know what we are doing, it has always been politics of mission, not politics of self-interest,” Museveni emphasized.
During the memorial, two books were launched to commemorate Kategaya’s legacy. The first is a tribute book featuring reflections from 20 distinguished individuals, and the second, Reflections of Resilience, is authored by his widow, Joan Kategaya.
Albert Gomes Mugumya, the consultant editor of the volumes, encouraged Ugandans to document their experiences for future generations. He also introduced a group of children of former Uganda People’s Movement (UPM) members.
Vice President H.E. Jessica Alupo praised Kategaya as a dedicated nationalist and Pan-Africanist who served his country with integrity.
“We have gathered here today to celebrate the life and numerous achievements of Rt. Hon. Eriya Kategaya,” she said.
She also recalled moments when Kategaya guided the cabinet in strategic discussions, which led to the formulation of impactful policies.
Joan Kategaya, the late statesman’s widow, expressed gratitude for the support her family has received over the years.
“Indeed, God’s protection has surrounded us. He has shielded and guided us through every season,” said Mrs. Kategaya, who serves as a Senior Presidential Advisor on Veteran Affairs.
She also extended appreciation to friends, family, and well-wishers.
“My message today is one of gratitude—to God for His steadfast love, to friends and family for their unwavering support, and to all who have walked this journey with us. Thank you,” she said.
Dr. Juliet Kategaya, a daughter of the late Kategaya, thanked President Museveni and the government for their continued support of their family.
“My father was a passionate and strategic community leader. He taught us the importance of planning ahead,” she said.
She also expressed her family’s appreciation to President Museveni and the First Lady for their unwavering support over the years.
