AMURU: The Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) has rebutted claims made by Amuru District LC5 Chairman, Michael Lakony, alleging that the ACholi-Madi tribal clashes in Apaa are a result of “security laxity”.

In an online publication by TND on March 9, 2024, Honorable Michael Lakony, the LCV Chairman of Amuru district, asserted in an interview with a TND writer that the turmoil in Apaa is due to “security laxity”.

However, Captain Kato Ahmad Hassan of the Uganda Peoples Defence Force 4th Division in Gulu dismissed Honorable Michael’s claims as unfounded and lacking clarity.

He suggested that the intent behind such assertions was to implicate the joint forces in the tribal conflict, insinuating their support for the Madi against the Acholi in Amuru. He emphasized the efforts of the forces in maintaining peace and order in areas like Zoka, Apaa, and Pakele sub-county.

He stated that clashes between the two communities have significantly decreased due to the extensive deployment of security personnel along their potential attack routes.

He further explained that recent attacks occurred west of Apaa towards the Nile and northeast in Pakele sub-county, areas where the Acholi and Madi communities have coexisted peacefully since the 1970s.

He urged politicians to refrain from exacerbating tensions and inciting violence among the communities.

In addition to current security measures, Captain Kato advised both communities to avoid establishing new settlements beyond established defense perimeters for their safety. He mentioned patrols and relief efforts among the forces to maintain effective security service delivery.
