Grief has engulfed pupils and teachers at Mubuku Primary School in Mubuku Town Council, Kasese District, following the tragic death of a Primary One pupil, identified as Magambo Innocent, aged 8, who drowned in River Mubuku on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:00 PM when the deceased was playing with friends near the river. According to reports, Magambo was swept away by fast-moving water, which had intensified due to a heavy downpour in the Rwenzori Mountains.
He was carried approximately 200 meters downstream.
The Officer in Charge at Mubuku Police Station, ASP Tukumubona Stephen, and his team, with the help of local residents, recovered the boy’s body from the Mubuku Prisons maize farm.
Rwenzori East Region Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant.
He emphasized the need to prevent children from playing near dangerous rivers, particularly River Nyamwamba, River Mubuku, and their tributaries, which continue to pose a serious threat to the community.
