The Kabale Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Martin Niwataho, has called on sports administrators in the Kigezi region to diversify school sports programs as a means to identify and nurture young talent.
Niwataho made the remarks on Tuesday evening while presiding over a trophy handover ceremony for schools that excelled in the Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) competitions. The event took place at the Lower Primary School playground in Kabale Municipality.
He expressed concern over the tendency of many schools to concentrate solely on football and netball, neglecting other equally important disciplines such as woodball, cricket, volleyball, and tennis.
According to Niwataho, introducing a wider variety of sports would help pupils discover and grow their unique talents.
“I encourage schools to broaden their sports programs. Not every child is good at football or netball. Some may excel in other games if given the opportunity,” Niwataho said. He also cautioned pupils to steer clear of behaviors that could jeopardize their future.
Kabale District Education Officer, Moses Bwengye, pledged the district’s continued support, including financial assistance for teams representing Kabale at national events.
Alex Biryomumeisho, the UPSSA Chairperson for Kabale District, highlighted the role of sports in promoting health and reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases.
He decried the lack of participation by some school heads who, despite receiving funding, opt out of tournaments, thereby denying pupils a chance to showcase and refine their abilities.
In the recent competitions, Kamuganguzi Primary School dominated both football and netball. They beat Ninarushengye Primary School 4–0 in the Under-14 football category and outplayed Mayengo Primary School 14–4 in netball.
As champions, Kamuganguzi Primary School will represent Kabale District at the National Championships scheduled to take place in Yumbe District from August 28 to September 8, 2025.
