KABALE: The Minister of State for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, David Bahati, has rewarded over 80 Pupils who achieved First Grade in the 2023 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) in Ndorwa West County of Kabale District with mattresses.

On Monday, the beneficiaries received their mattresses at the Sub County and Town Council headquarters in the Constituency. The delivery was facilitated by Canon Enock Kazooba, the LC3 Chairperson for Lyakarimira Town Council, and Minister Bahati’s political assistant, Wilber Kanyesigye.

This initiative, an annual tradition, sees each P.7 candidate from Ndorwa West County who scores Division 1 receiving a mattress from Bahati, not only to prepare them for secondary school but also to encourage other students in lower classes to strive for academic excellence.

Expressing their gratitude, parents such as Bosco Ndyomugabe and Nivious Ninsiima from Karujanga commended Minister Bahati for his efforts in promoting education in the area. However, they also voiced their support for a government proposal, still pending, which calls for standard school fees across the country, aiming to make education more accessible to all Ugandans.

While the proposal garnered support, the head teachers of Kakomo Primary School, Dickson Tabaruka, and St. Michael Kurujanga Primary School, Edward Akanyebembera, welcomed it cautiously. They expressed concerns about the impact of standardized fees on school performance, noting that schools are often graded based on their resources, including the fees they charge.

They suggested that for the proposal to be fair, the government should address teacher grievances, provide staff quarters, and support parents where financial assistance is needed.
