KABALE – Kabale Regional Referral Hospital is grappling with the scarcity of a specialized neurologist to address the pressing needs of patients grappling with intricate brain-related ailments necessitating surgical interventions.
This vital healthcare institution serves as a beacon of hope for the six districts comprising the formidable Kigezi sub-region located in the picturesque landscapes of south-western Uganda.
Dr. Nyeko John Philbert, the dedicated Hospital Director, sheds light on the staggering statistics – a monthly influx of 15 to 20 cases, out of which 2 to 3 cases invariably demand immediate referral to the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in Mbarara City, seeking advanced medical care.
Dr. Nyeko unearths the poignant reality that the hospital often receives patients battling brain hemorrhages and other complex cerebral conditions. He expressed his plea for the availability of a minimum of one or two proficient neurologists, a measure that promises to alleviate the overwhelming burden on the facility, ultimately expediting critical patient care.
Despite their best efforts, Dr Nyeko added that the hospital has grappled with the challenge of recruiting these specialists, with many falling short of the institution’s lofty expectations. Dr. Nyeko acknowledges a disheartening reality – a significant number of potential candidates hesitating due to inadequate facilities that fail to meet their professional requisites.
