The Ministry of Health has launched the construction of Shs 500 Million surgical theatre at Kitgum Matidi Health Centre III in Kitgum Matidi Town Council, Kitgum District.
The project follows successful lobbying by the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Dr. Lilian Aber, and is seen as a major step in enhancing healthcare services in the region.
Presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, Hon. Aber thanked the Ministry for responding to her request, noting that the facility will significantly reduce the cost and burden of medical referrals for residents of Kitgum Matidi and neighboring areas, including parts of Agago District.
“This theatre will not only reduce referral costs but also bring essential surgical services closer to our communities,” said Hon. Aber. She added that she would continue to lobby for an ambulance to improve emergency response and access to care.
Kitgum District Health Officer, Dr. Henry Okello Otto, praised the Ministry and Hon. Aber for their support, noting that the new theatre will attract more patients as it will expand the range of services offered at the facility.
He also highlighted plans to upgrade the health center to Health Centre IV status, which would improve staffing and post-operative care.
Dr. Okello confirmed that additional health workers will be recruited in the 2026/2027 financial year through a joint effort between Kitgum District Local Government and the Ministry of Public Service.
The six-month construction project is being implemented by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.
