Police in Lamwo District have recovered approximately 4,900 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a garden at Otong Lawatpura Village, Ayuualali Parish, Palabek Kal Sub-county.
The ammunition was recovered on Sunday, July 26, 2026, following information provided by vigilant members of the community about suspected ammunition hidden in the area.
A joint team comprising Lamwo Police, Crime Intelligence personnel and the Scene of Crime Officer searched a garden belonging to 67-year-old Okot Mathew and recovered seven metallic tins containing the ammunition.
Preliminary findings indicate that the ammunition may have been concealed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) during the insurgency in Northern Uganda more than two decades ago.
Police said initial examination showed that the ammunition remained live and serviceable despite having been hidden for an extended period.
The recovered ammunition has been secured and placed under police custody pending technical examination and disposal in accordance with established procedures.
The Lamwo District Police Commander, SP Magombe Reagan, commended members of the community for their vigilance and timely sharing of information, saying community cooperation remains critical in preventing crime and removing dangerous items from public circulation.
Police have also sensitised residents on the dangers of handling, tampering with or transporting suspected ammunition, explosives and other remnants of war.
SP Magombe rallied the public to always report any discovery of suspected ammunition or explosives to the nearest police station or other security agency for safe recovery and disposal.
Crime Intelligence has launched investigations to establish the origin and circumstances under which the ammunition was concealed at the site. The inquiry is being conducted under Ngomoromo SCPM Station SD Ref: 08/26/07/2026.
