Police in Kabale District have asked school administrators to strengthen fire safety measures following a fire outbreak at Solberg Secondary School in Nyabikoni, Kabale Municipality, on Sunday afternoon.

The fire, which broke out at the school, was swiftly responded to by the Police Fire and Rescue Services, who managed to contain it before it spread to other buildings.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime, authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage and losses caused by the incident, while investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

The incident has renewed concerns about fire preparedness in schools, particularly the need for safe dormitory facilities and regular emergency response training for students.

SP Tumushime cautioned school administrators to ensure that students’ dormitories are not overcrowded and have clear emergency exits to facilitate safe evacuation in case of fire or other emergencies.
