On Sunday, through his X (formerly Twitter) account, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, claimed that the government deliberately targeted Ssegirinya. “I hope Gen. Museveni feels proud of what he did to Ssegirinya! For two years, he was in jail, and we repeatedly asked the regime to prosecute him. To present evidence linking him to the killings in Masaka. They failed because that evidence simply didn’t exist,” he wrote.

“At one court session, the witnesses tried to speak up, but they were silenced. The judge who initially allowed them to speak was transferred and replaced with another,” Kyagulanyi added.

He further accused the regime of denying Ssegirinya bail, even as his health deteriorated.

“Gen. Museveni publicly condemned the granting of bail, intimidating judges. But judges who repeatedly denied him bail share in the blame for his death. A judge worth their salt would rather risk being denied a promotion or flee to exile, like Justice Esther Kisakye, than be used as an instrument of oppression,” Kyagulanyi said.

Kyagulanyi urged the judiciary to uphold the Constitution and lamented the absence of principled judges like the late Chief Justice Ben Kiwanuka.

He commended Ssegirinya’s dedication to serving the people of Kawempe North, describing him as a true representation of NUP’s values of standing for the common person.

“Ssegirinya was a voice for boda-boda riders, market vendors, and the downtrodden. He invested in healthcare, economic empowerment, and community service—responsibilities that should fall on the government but don’t because of its failure,” Kyagulanyi said during Ssegirinya’s burial in Masaka District.

According to Kyagulanyi, Ssegirinya faced conspiracies involving some politicians and the regime, leading to his arrest, torture, and eventual death.

“He spent his entire tenure as an MP either in prison or in hospital. He didn’t enjoy even one day as a free legislator.” He said.

Kyagulanyi declared that Ssegirinya’s death was part of a broader pattern of political repression.

“The Museveni regime murders some openly and others covertly, whether through bullets, poison, or slow and painful means. Ssegirinya has officially joined the long list of Ugandans killed by this regime,” he stated.

Kyagulanyi also noted the grief of Ssegirinya’s mother and children.

“His mother protested alone outside Parliament, weeping and pleading for her son’s life, but the regime ignored her. Now, his children have joined the long list of orphans left behind by Museveni’s regime of blood,” he said.

In response, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara dismissed Kyagulanyi’s accusations, defending President Museveni and his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“President Museveni and Gen. Kainerugaba are known for their commitment to peace, harmony, and love for all Ugandans. It is unfair to label them as criminals without evidence,” Barugahara said. He emphasized Gen. Kainerugaba’s dedication to protecting Uganda’s sovereignty and promoting development.

Barugahara called for constructive dialogue rather than baseless accusations.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but let us focus on fostering understanding and respect. President Museveni and Gen. Kainerugaba deserve recognition for their contributions to Uganda’s progress, not unfounded allegations,” he concluded.
