The former Mukono District Speaker, Betty Hope Nakasi, has been remanded to prison until October 21, 2026, after being charged with corruption before the Anti-Corruption Court.
Nakasi was arraigned before the court on Thursday following investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The prosecution alleges that on June 30, 2025, at the Mukono District Local Government headquarters, Nakasi, together with other suspects still at large, solicited Shs2 million from the then Procurement Officer of Buikwe District.
According to the allegations, Nakasi claimed that she could use her influence over the Mukono District Service Commission to help the officer secure promotion to the position of Senior Procurement Officer in Mukono District in exchange for the money.
She was subsequently charged and remanded until October 21 when she is expected to return to court.
Her arrest follows investigations into allegations surrounding the illegal sale of government jobs in Mukono District Local Government.
The investigations were reportedly prompted by complaints of extortion involving some members of the District Service Commission and politicians in the district.
The Anti-Corruption Unit said the operation is part of efforts to implement President Museveni’s repeated directives against the illegal sale of government jobs and to ensure that those implicated are brought to justice.
The allegations against Nakasi remain subject to determination by the court.
