The Minister of State for General Duties, Henry Musasizi, on Tuesday delivered a keynote address and officially opened the 2nd Peer-to-Peer Learning Conference on Financial Services, Banking and Insurance at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.
The conference, held under the theme “Digital Innovation in Financial Services to Boost Cross-Border Trade and Productivity: Empowering East Africa’s FinTech Ecosystem,” has brought together heads of regulatory authorities, investors, fintech companies, and leaders from across the financial sector in the East African Community (EAC).
Participants are engaging in impactful public-private dialogue and reflecting on regional experiences to advance financial services in the region.
Minister Musasizi described the conference as timely for the region’s financial sector, especially as ICT continues to transform access to and delivery of financial services.
“In 2023 alone, East Africans conducted more than 36 Billion mobile money transactions, valued at USD 200 Billion,” he noted.
He added that Uganda’s financial inclusion rate has significantly improved from just 28% in 2009 to over 66% today, with more than 25 million registered mobile money accounts.
“These changes present unprecedented opportunities for deeper regional integration, greater financial inclusion, and more sustainable development,” Minister Musasizi said.
