The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has directed all its leaders, from village to national level, who have been nominated as independent candidates in the 2025/2026 general elections, to immediately resign their positions.
The directive, issued on Monday by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, targets members who either lost in the party primaries or chose not to contest under the NRM flag but have since sought nomination as independents.
Todwong emphasized that such actions undermine party cohesion and could disrupt the coordination of campaign activities ahead of the polls.
“The purpose of this communication is to direct those who have been nominated as independents to resign your positions as Party leaders and hand over the offices to your Vice Chairpersons or respective NRM Party Chairpersons,” Todwong stated.
The directive comes as the Electoral Commission continues to receive nominations for the upcoming elections, a process that opened on September 3rd and will run until October 16th, 2025.
According to the party leadership, any official who refuses to comply risks suspension from participating in NRM electoral activities.
Todwong stressed that the move is meant to instill discipline, reinforce unity, and ensure the NRM approaches the 2025/2026 elections as a cohesive and organized force.
