Police have foiled an attempted attack on Bugoye Sub-county Police Station in Kasese District, killing one of the suspected attackers and arresting four others for questioning.
The incident occurred at about 2:40am on Thursday when a group of about six men, allegedly armed with pangas, attacked the police officer on duty at the station counter.
According to Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, one of the suspects, identified as Masereka Zalimoni Kyanakyibi, a resident of Magoma Village in Muramba Parish, Bugoye Sub-county, attempted to disarm the officer.
“The officer overpowered him and shot him in the leg,” ASP Maate said in a statement on Thursday.
The other suspects reportedly fled after realising that more than one police officer was on duty and that the officers were alert.
Police said Kyanakyibi managed to limp away from the station but later succumbed to his injuries.
The station was subsequently reinforced by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), while the Regional Police Commander, the Kasese District Police Commander and other officers from Kasese Police Division visited the scene.
Four suspects were arrested during the subsequent inquiries. They are Irumba Simon, 26; Kiiza Abson, 29, a casual worker; Kadama George, 25, a businessman; and Baluku Lenaxi, 28, a casual worker.
Police said all four suspects are residents of Muramba II Village, Bugoye Parish, Bugoye Sub-county.
A panga was recovered from the scene, which police said was visited and documented.
ASP Maate said community policing was also conducted in the area as investigations continue.
The body of the deceased suspect was taken to the Kasese Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem examination.
“Inquiries are still ongoing,” ASP Maate said.
