The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched a large-scale environmental conservation initiative in the Kigezi sub-region, planting over 30,000 trees across Kisoro, Kabale, Rukiga, Rubanda, Rukungiri, and Kanungu districts.

The initiative marks the first phase of civil-military activities ahead of the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary in February next year.

The drive, spearheaded by Brigadier General Michael Kibuye, Director of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC), targeted key community areas and major road stretches. Soldiers worked alongside local residents to plant a variety of tree and fruit species, promoting both environmental sustainability and community nutrition.

Brigadier General Justus Rukundo, leading the UPDF team in Rukungiri, described the effort as a central pillar of the Tarehe Sita activities.

“This exercise is a symbol of environmental regeneration for a healthier ecosystem, which is a key focus of our celebrations,” he said.

In Rukiga District, trees were planted along Rukiri Road, at sub-county and district headquarters, and in Kamwezi Town Council. Lt. Col. Richard Nimanya, head of Operations for CIMIC, stressed the link between environmental stewardship and security.

“Human security involves protecting the environment where people live,” he said, adding that tree planting along roads helps reduce soil erosion, protect infrastructure, and improve road safety.

In Rubanda, the Assistant RDC, Martin Turyagenda, praised the UPDF as a “highly disciplined and battle-tested force” for focusing on development and environmental conservation in the Kigezi region.

Beyond tree planting, the UPDF joined residents in a sanitation drive, cleaning public areas such as landing sites and markets. They also constructed several aqua privy and VIP toilets at schools and health centers across the sub-region.

This comprehensive civil-military initiative is part of the UPDF’s ongoing effort to engage communities in development and environmental protection while acknowledging the longstanding support of the Kigezi population.
