The Vice President of Uganda, Rtd Maj. Jessica Rose Alupo, has officially commissioned the construction of an 8.7-kilometer road in Katakwi District. The project, located in Okulonyo Sub-county, is estimated to cost Uganda Shillings 1 billion and will connect Okulonyo Sub-county to Ongogonja Sub-county via Aumoi Dam.
Demonstrating her dedication to community development, Vice President Alupo emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and citizens for shared progress.
“Most of the roads in the district need to be monitored by your office before you leave,” Alupo stated, directing her remarks to local leaders.
She highlighted several key roads in need of attention, including the Okocho – Olilim road, Okoritok–Oburatum road, and roads within Katakwi Town Council.
Alupo also cautioned contractors against substandard work, which she described as a betrayal of the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in rural communities.
“This hands-on approach not only accelerates road development but also strengthens community bonds,” she added.
Civil Engineer Edward Gagula, representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, acknowledged the government’s commitment to addressing road access challenges across the country. He confirmed that the contractor has been given a six-month timeline to complete the project.
“We will work closely with the contracted company to ensure the road serves its intended purpose,” Gagula said.
Edison Kasereka, Managing Director of SEECO Construction Co. Ltd, the company awarded the contract, promised to deliver quality work within the agreed timeframe.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Katakwi, Xavier Vincent Okwi, urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the project’s specifications.
“My office will closely monitor the construction until completion to ensure it meets the intended purpose,” Okwi stated.
Esesa Lydia Apio, Katakwi District Engineer, expressed her gratitude to the Government of Uganda and particularly to the Vice President for her efforts in lobbying for improved service delivery.
She assured residents of Katakwi of her continued oversight of the road works to ensure quality standards are met throughout the construction process.
Hon. Geoffrey Omolo, LC5 Chairperson of Katakwi District, reiterated the Vice President’s concerns about substandard work by some contractors. He encouraged the contractor to uphold integrity and involve the local community throughout the construction.
Andrew Moses Achia, GISO for Okulonyo Sub-county, thanked the government for its thoughtful initiative, saying the new road will significantly enhance security and accessibility between the two sub-counties.
Also in attendance were RDC of Karenga District, Filbert Ocailap, Maj. Gidudu of the Whiskey Battalion, the DPC of Katakwi District, and several other dignitaries.
