NUP Endorses Sultana Salim for Kisoro Woman MP By-Election

KAMPALA: The National Unity Platform (NUP) on Monday endorsed Sultana Salim, also known as Tana, as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament by-election.

Sultana was unveiled by NUP President Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, during the party’s weekly press briefing at NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule.

She received the party’s symbol, an umbrella, marking her official candidacy.

She will face off against the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Hon. Rose Kabagyeni, who was voted as the party’s candidate in last week’s primary elections.

Kabagyeni’s victory was confirmed on Friday at 11:00 p.m. at the Rukiiko Hall in Kisoro District by Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission.

In the primary, Kabagyeni received a total of 39,941 votes, defeating her closest competitor, Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, who garnered 39,197 votes. Irene Muhirwe came third with 1,729 votes, followed by Fancy Brenda Nirere with 1,593 votes.

Other candidates included Winfred Faith Igiraneza with 510 votes, Jemimah Irakunda with 363 votes, Hellen Mbonye with 111 votes, and Blessed Kitentera with 248 votes.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission, nominations for the District Woman Representative to Parliament for Kisoro District and other Local Government Councils by-elections will take place from Wednesday, October 30, to Thursday, October 31, 2024.

The exercise will be held at the District Council Hall, Kisoro District, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, urged all aspiring candidates to review the nomination requirements for each position as outlined in the Commission’s guidelines.

“Aspiring candidates can collect copies of the nomination forms and guidelines from the Office of the District Election Administrator in Kisoro District,” he added.
