Opposition Parties in Kisoro District are positioning themselves to take advantage of growing discontent within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) following the party’s controversial internal primaries.
Citing irregularities such as vote inflation, participation of ineligible voters, particularly students and misconduct at polling centers, opposition leaders believe the fallout has created a new opening ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Once a reliable NRM stronghold, Kisoro is now witnessing shifting political dynamics as several disgruntled NRM aspirants consider running as independents, a move critics say signals internal fractures.
Albert Tugume, the Kisoro District chairperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), said the primaries have exposed weaknesses in the ruling party’s grip on the region.

However, political analyst Tumushime Emmanuel downplayed the long-term impact of the disputes, arguing that internal party disagreements are common and can be resolved. He advised the NRM to address concerns raised by its members and conduct a thorough review of the primary process ahead of the 2026 elections.

As the countdown to the general polls begins, Kisoro’s political scene remains uncertain. The opposition senses an opportunity, while the NRM faces mounting pressure to repair internal divisions before voters head to the ballot.
