Renowned city lawyer and economist, Counsel Kiconco Patrick Katabaazi best known as KP has taken a significant step toward his ambition of becoming Rukiga County’s next Member of Parliament following a landslide victory in the NRM internal elections.

Katabaazi defeated Nabuto Joweria to win the position of NRM Secretary for Finance for Rukiga District, securing 160 votes against his opponent’s 43 in an election held on May 23, 2025.

His victory was officially declared by Rukiga District NRM Registrar Yalyakumanyi Selubowa Twaha amidst jubilant celebrations from his supporters.

This marks KP’s fourth consecutive win in the ongoing NRM internal elections. He was previously elected unopposed as Secretary for Finance for both Nyangorogoro Village and Kitojo Parish. On May 16, 2025, he also clinched the position of NRM Chairperson for Rwamucuucu Sub county, again unopposed.

A respected legal expert and economist, Katabaazi has spent the last three to four years actively campaigning for the Rukiga County MP seat. His grassroots slogan, “Twombeke Rukiga” which translates to “Let’s build Rukiga” has resonated widely across the district, earning him the affectionate nicknames “Omwombeki” (the builder) and “Omushakazi” (the roofer).

Staying true to his slogan, Katabaazi has consistently donated construction materials, especially iron sheets and cement to churches and schools involved in development projects. This philanthropic approach has significantly boosted his popularity and community goodwill.

Notably, former Sheema RDC Frank Besigye Kyereere, who served as Katabaazi’s campaign strategist during his Rwamucuucu Sub county bid, also secured victory as District NRM Chairperson, defeating former Chairperson Kampikaho Alex.

Sources reveal that approximately 90% of the newly elected members of the Rukiga District NRM Executive Committee are affiliated with Team Humble Management, a volunteer task force rallying support for Katabaazi.

While the final outcome of the Rukiga MP race remains to be seen, KP’s consistent wins and deep-rooted grassroots engagement have cemented his status as a formidable front-runner.

Speaking after his May 23 victory, Katabaazi reflected on his journey through the NRM ranks:

“Today, the people of Rukiga have shown the world that no one can emerge from nowhere and claim a victory they haven’t worked for. We’ve been here for months doing the groundwork, meeting people, and showing them who we are and what we can do. They already understand our capabilities. And today, they didn’t just speak, they acted.”
