As Ugandans gear up for the festive season, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has intensified nationwide operations to ensure the safety of all road users. The countrywide campaign, code-named “Arrive Alive,” is already registering positive results by promoting compliance with traffic laws and reducing the risk of road crashes.

In the past week alone, traffic officers apprehended 644 drivers for various offences, including operating vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition, reckless driving and speeding, illegal vehicle modifications, drink-driving, and driving without valid licences. The enforcement drive has also targeted abandoned vehicles, dangerous loading, and carrying passengers in unsafe positions.

The Directorate’s spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, said the ongoing operations are aimed at preventing avoidable accidents and ensuring that travellers reach their destinations safely throughout the festive period.

To further enhance road safety, Kananura said the Directorate has issued clear guidelines for motorists and transport operators.

“Long-distance buses must observe mandatory rest periods, while only licensed and properly documented vehicles will be allowed to operate. Drivers are required to carry valid licences and identification, ensure vehicles are mechanically sound, and strictly observe speed limits. Risky overtaking, mobile phone use while driving, and drink-driving are prohibited, while the use of seatbelts and helmets remains mandatory”. He said.

Beyond enforcement, Kananura noted that the Directorate is rolling out public education and road safety awareness campaigns through the media and community platforms. These efforts are being undertaken in collaboration with government agencies, transport operators, religious institutions, civil society, and the private sector.
