The Uganda Prisons Service has slaughtered 533 cows and more than 400 goats and sheep to provide meat to staff, their families, and inmates across the country for Christmas celebrations. The distribution covers all 269 prisons nationwide.
While addressing Journalists at Luzira Prison in Kampala on Wednesday, Frank Baine, Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Head of Corporate Affairs/Service Spokesperson, said the initiative ensures that both inmates and staff can share in the festive season.
“While many Ugandans are already heading to their villages to celebrate Christmas, we remain on duty to serve the inmates and staff. This gesture allows everyone in our institutions to be part of the Christmas celebrations,” he said.
The program benefits approximately 78,000 inmates and 14,000 staff members, with each receiving at least five kilograms of meat. About three-quarters of the cattle came from Uganda Prisons’ own farms, while the rest was procured through internal savings.
Commissioner Baine emphasized the dual focus on welfare and security. “The service is committed to both welfare and duty. Even as we celebrate, our staff remains alert to ensure security, reflecting the message of the Inspector General of Police: while citizens enjoy the festivities, security agencies remain vigilant,” he said.
