Police in Kazo District have arrested three suspects in connection with a robbery attack in which three people, including two children, were killed and two others injured.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 25, at Kagasha 1 Cell, Nkungu Parish, Nkungu Sub-county.
The deceased have been identified as Ntegyerize Afusa, 47, and two juveniles, Tumuramye Sudais, 14, and Nuwandinda Asifa, 11.
The injured victims are Nagasha Zulaika, 16, a pupil, and Nuwahereza Aramazani, 13. They were rushed to a health facility where they are receiving treatment.
According to police, the incident was reported at about 8am by Nuwahereza Abdul Ratifu, who told the Officer in Charge of Nkungu Police Station that his mother, brother and sister had been killed.
Police said Nuwahereza discovered the bodies after he went to his mother’s home to pick up his tricycle, commonly known as a tuk-tuk, to go to work.
“He found the house open and discovered the deceased lying in pools of blood. He also found the two injured children in another bedroom and immediately rushed them to a health facility before reporting the matter to police,” police said in a statement.
A case file was opened at Kazo Central Police Station under reference Kazo CRB 690/2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the attackers had information that the deceased had received about Shs1.5 million, which was reportedly kept in her room.
Police said the assailants allegedly accessed the house through a back door that had not been properly secured before attacking the occupants with a hammer, panga and walking stick.
They subsequently took the money and fled.
Police deployed a sniffer dog to the scene as part of the investigation, and the dog reportedly picked up a scent that led detectives to Nuwamanya Christopher, who was arrested.
His arrest led to the subsequent apprehension of his alleged accomplices, Nuwamanya Micheal and Asiimwe Abel.
Police said searches conducted at the suspects’ residences resulted in the recovery of several valuable exhibits believed to be connected to the incident.
The exhibits have been secured for submission to forensic experts for further examination.
The three suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and the alleged roles of each suspect.
SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region police spokesperson, said inquiries were ongoing.
