KISORO – Security operatives in Kisoro District have apprehended Gestin Ngoga, a 22-year-old M23 soldier residing in Rucuro Kiwanja, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The suspect stand accused of aggravated robbery involving money and mobile phones, which belonged to Lawrence Nasasira, a Boda Boda rider from Kakanke village, Mupaka town council in Kisoro district.
According to a police statement released on 10/9/2023, at approximately 5:00 PM in Kinanira village, Mupaka town council, the victim was riding his motorcycle when he was intercepted by Ngoga.
The suspect, armed with an SMG rifle bearing serial number CDFA2719381 and equipped with two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, robbed Nasasira of Ugx 400,000 in cash and two mobile phones. After the robbery, the victim was ordered to leave the scene.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, revealed that the case of aggravated robbery was reported at Mupaka border police post in Kisoro district.
UPDF 35 Battalion officers pursued and successfully apprehended the suspect, recovering the stolen rifle, ammunition, and phones in the process.
Maate confirmed that Ngoga is an M23 rebel, and the case has been transferred to the UPDF. The recovered rifle and ammunition have been submitted to the 2nd Division headquarters in Makenke, Mbarara, for further handling.
Maate also mentioned that a case file for aggravated robbery has been opened, and statements from both the victim and the suspect have been obtained. Investigations are ongoing.
