KISORO: Police in Kisoro District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder of a 5-year-old girl.
The deceased has been identified as Provia Niyoshuti, a pupil and resident of Bugara village, Gasiza parish, Nyakabande sub-county, Kisoro district.
According to a police statement, on Wednesday at around 3:00 PM, Provia went with her mother to visit her grandmother’s home in Kibaya cell. During the visit, she went to the neighbor Sebazungu’s home and did not return. Her family searched for her but she could not be found.
Local residents were informed and mobilized to assist in the search, but their efforts were in vain. On Thursday, the family reported her disappearance to the Kisoro Police Station.
On Friday morning, local residents resumed their search and discovered Provia’s body in a polythene sack (Kadeyi), dumped in a garden about 15 meters from Sebazungu’s home. They reported the incident to the police.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, stated that the crime scene was visited and documented, statements were obtained from relevant witnesses, and a postmortem was conducted at Kisoro Hospital.
Maate added that three suspects, including Damiano Kabahoze, a teacher who had previously threatened the deceased’s father over land, were arrested to assist in the investigation. Sebazungu remains at large as inquiries continue to establish the motive behind the murder.
