SHEEMA: Police in Sheema District have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of 72-year-old Godfrey Nyehangane, a retired teacher from Kabwohe Division, Sheema Municipality.
The suspects are identified as Magezi Victor (22), Turyasingura Stuart (20), both herdsmen employed by the deceased, and Kato Stephen (17), a student who also worked at Nyehangane’s home.
The Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, SP Martial Tumusiime, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were linked to the murder of Nyehangane, a resident of Nyamiyaga Cell, Kakunyu Ward, Sheema Municipality.
According to SP Tumusiime, police deployed a canine unit at the crime scene, which led investigators to the workers’ quarters stating that “The dog identified Magezi Victor, one of the workers, who was subsequently arrested, along with his fellow workers, to assist in the investigation”.
SP Tumusiime reported that the incident occurred on the night of September 18-19, 2024.
”At 7:15 AM on September 19, 2024, ASP Kasule Consilanta, the DPC of Sheema, received a phone call from Tashobya Daniel Kamugisha, a resident of Nyamiyaga. Kamugisha reported that unknown assailants had attacked and killed Nyehangane in his home, stealing several household items afterward”. He said.
He added “A case was opened under Sheema SD Ref 10/19/09/2024 and CRB 590/2024. The scene was inspected by a team of police officers, including the DPC, OC CID, the homicide team, a canine unit, and SOCO (Scene of Crime Officers), who documented the crime scene. Inside the house, police found the body of the deceased lying face down, with his legs tied. Nyehangane was dressed in black shorts and a white shirt”.
“Upon further examination, blood was found oozing from his mouth and nose, suggesting suffocation as the likely cause of death. No other visible injuries were observed, except for his legs being bound with cables used to connect a television set”. He noted.
SP Tumusiime also noted that a TV flat screen, the victim’s phone, and other unidentified items were stolen during the attack.
“Witness statements were recorded, and the body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as investigations continue”. He said.
