The Kabale University Guild President, Justus Drake Kyarikuda has issued an urgent appeal to university management seeking intervention over a planned demolition of key student welfare facilities, warning of a looming crisis if immediate action is not taken.

In a formal communication issued on 16th April 2026, Kyarikuda called on the university leadership to engage Kabale Municipal Council and secure a waiver for the Guild canteens and two restaurants located within and near the main campus gate, which are scheduled for demolition by Monday next week.

While acknowledging the Municipal Council’s efforts to streamline urban development, the Guild President emphasized that the abrupt enforcement of the directive could severely disrupt student life, particularly in the middle of the academic semester.

He noted that many students have already paid for semester meal plans, and demolishing the facilities at this stage would create uncertainty around service delivery and refunds, potentially leading to financial losses and unrest among the student body.

Kyarikuda further highlighted the strain the move would place on the university’s limited food service capacity. The affected facilities currently serve between 150 and 200 students during peak lunch hours, and their sudden removal would leave the Tourism Unit as the only on-campus option—one he described as unaffordable for many students.

He also raised concerns about potential health risks, warning that students may be forced to seek cheaper food alternatives off-campus in Mwanjari, where food safety standards are reportedly questionable.

On behalf of the student community, Kyarikuda appealed for a temporary stay of execution on the demolition of the three facilities until the end of the semester, to allow for a smooth transition that safeguards student welfare, finances, and academic concentration.

University management is yet to respond to the appeal, as students await a resolution to the matter.
