Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has urged teachers to suspend their ongoing strike, assuring them that Parliament will address the salary disparities between teachers of humanities and sciences in the 2026/2027 National Budget.
Speaking on Wednesday after receiving a petition from the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), Among promised that Parliament will work closely with the Executive to ensure fair treatment of all teachers.
“As Parliament of Uganda, I want to promise you that we are going to do whatever it takes to ensure that these issues are resolved. I am happy that you have brought this petition before the budgeting process begins,” Among said.
She revealed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is fully aware of the concerns raised and supports efforts to harmonize the salaries of teachers across disciplines.
“I want to request you, please go back and do your work as we handle this issue. Parliament will not let you down. The commitment I am giving you is also on behalf of President Museveni because we always work hand in hand with the Executive,” she added.
The Speaker appealed to teachers not to “paralyze the country,” assuring them that their welfare remains a top priority for both Parliament and government.
To fast-track the process, Among directed the Committees on Public Service and Education to hold a joint session and scrutinize the existing salary gaps between science and arts teachers.
“We are referring this petition to the Committee on Education and Sports together with the Committee on Public Service so that they can study it and advise Parliament. We shall also write to the Minister of Public Service and attach your petitions for immediate action,” Among directed.
UNATU General Secretary Filbert Baguma, who led the delegation, emphasized that their demand is not excessive but seeks to restore fairness within the teaching profession.
“Our demand is a call for equity, not privilege. When teachers thrive, Uganda’s learners and the nation’s future thrive with them. Addressing these disparities now will help prevent future industrial actions that disrupt learning,” Baguma said.
The teachers’ union petitioned Parliament to ensure that salaries for teachers of humanities are brought to the same level as those of science teachers, a move they say will promote fairness and motivation within the education sector.
