“Many of today’s graduates are teachers upgrading their qualifications. While the government has increased teachers’ salaries, the preferential treatment of Science teachers over Arts teachers is unfair and must be revised. Both disciplines are equally important and deserve equal pay,” he said.

He also reiterated the need to support and mentor the boy child, stressing the importance of raising responsible husbands and a morally upright generation.

“The best graduates at this ceremony are girls—well-mentored, cultured, and trained. But where are their future husbands? We must mentor the boy child to prepare a better future for our girls,” Archbishop Kaziimba noted.

Hon. Kabuye Kyofatogabye, the Minister of State for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, represented Hon. Monica Musenero, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, as the Chief Guest.

He commended President Yoweri Museveni for creating an enabling environment for affordable university education and lauded UCU for pioneering online education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“UCU worked tirelessly to maintain high-quality education during the tough times of COVID-19 by embracing virtual learning, a model that has since been adopted by other universities,” Hon. Kyofatogabye said.

He encouraged graduates to maintain a growth mindset. “There is no wrong or right degree. What matters is your thinking and attitude toward achieving your goals. Don’t settle go back to school and upgrade.”

Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, the Vice Chancellor of UCU, highlighted ongoing infrastructure development under the university’s seven-year Campus Transformation Initiative (CTI). The initiative aims to modernize campus facilities, enhance learning environments, and improve student experiences.

The transformation includes digitized campus services, refurbished facilities, upgraded roads and walkways, and landscaped campuses. Prof. Mushengyezi charged the graduates to uphold UCU’s core values as they venture into the world.

Dr. Kigenyi Erisa Mazaki, the Principal of UCU Mbale University College, urged graduates to maintain the values they acquired at UCU, emphasizing that character is a key determinant of success.

“People with good character are among the scarcest resources in the world today. The knowledge, skills, and values you have acquired here must shape your character,” Dr. Kigenyi advised.

Rt. Rev. Samuel George Bogere Egesa, Chairperson of the College Governing Council, encouraged graduates to embrace servant leadership, remain uncorruptible, and approach life with humility.

“Do not despise humble beginnings or the jobs currently available. Formal jobs are scarce and often mired in bureaucracies. Serve with integrity wherever you are,” he said.
